Even though I believe that the Church at Rome departed from the true faith over a thousand years ago, I don’t believe that the fall from grace was instantaneous. Just like throughout salvation history, falling away can be very gradual and in degrees.

If you are a Roman Catholic and have not read the catechism yet, I highly recommend you start with the sacrament of confirmation: https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/__P3P.HTM

Here are some quotes:

“It must be explained to the faithful that the reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace”

THIS MEANS YOUR BAPTISM IS NOT COMPLETE UNTIL YOU ARE CONFIRMED.

That’s right, if you aren’t confirmed you’re a “half baked” Christian. This is a departure from the apostolic tradition (still preserved in the east).

Read the first sentence again: “Baptism, the Eucharist, and the sacrament of Confirmation together constitute the “sacraments of Christian initiation,” whose unity must be safeguarded.

Paragraphs 1290-1292 gives some context for what happened, but admits that “the East has kept them [Baptism and Confirmation] united”
